Time to tear down the wall of silence around infertilityEVERYONE thinks it will never happen to them. Unfortunately lightning not only strikes, it touches one couple in six. I'm referring to infertility, which is one of the last taboos.

People are reluctant to discuss it, even though 2pc of all births in Ireland -- 1,000 babies a year -- come about as a result of fertility treatment.

A curious wall of silence surrounds the subject. Some of the bricks in this barrier are in place because couples find it painful to be open about their condition, from a combination of grief, disappointment and shame.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
