Just adopt!

It's hard having to explain to people why some of us have chosen NOT to "just adopt". I'm sure they think we are just selfish, and don't really want a child. I really hate that sentiment, "if you really wanted a child you would..." adopt, do IVF, use DE, etc.
Sounds like such a simple solution, just stop into the local adoption agency, pick up a child and live happily ever after. And yes, sometimes that does happen. Hopefully, more often than not.
But I have always been aware of the dark side of adoption, and I know that it is not the guaranteed "happily ever after" story people think it is. These kids often have had a lifetime of struggle, pain and damage already.
Potentially adoptive parents often think that loving a kid is enough to make them OK. It's not.
When adoption doesn't 'work out'

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
