You Can Get Pregnant in Your 40's

Couples should be given three free cycles of IVF to fight the "social disorder" of infertility, a leading expert has claimed.

Sam Abdalla, medical director of the Lister Fertility Clinic in London, said the NHS was failing to implement a 2004 NICE directive calling for free treatment.

"Infertility is not only a disease, it is also a social disorder with a profound effect on the individual, the family and wider society," Mr Abdalla said.

The doctor is offering 21 free cycles of IVF to mark the 21st birthday of the Lister Fertility Clinic, treatment at which has resulted in more than 10,000 births.

Some Pregnant Women Fearful of H1N1 Vaccine

An article in Minneapolis Star Tribune reports on how some pregnant women are skeptical of the new H1N1 vaccine. Pregnant women are among the groups strongly advised to get the vaccine, but many women are less than thrilled about the idea of getting the shot, reporting concerns about the safety of the vaccine and possible effects for the unborn baby.

Infertile Couples Turn To Embryo Adoption

CINCINNATI -- Some couples unable to get pregnant have turned to an unusual form of adoption. The couples are getting pregnant with another couples' embryo. Jennifer Schanne and her husband endured four miscarriages before turning to in-vitro fertilization.

"We froze our embryos in case something didn't work or we only had one baby. We knew we wanted to have more then one," said Schanne.

Healthy lifestyle contract for fertility patients

Eligible patients will be required to sign up to a health and lifestyle improvement programme including stop smoking, not drinking and losing weight if necessary before they embark on IVF treatment.

In return the Bridge clinic in central London is offering a fixed price package of treatment including optional acupuncture and a second free cycle of IVF if the first one fails.

The package will cost £4,500 and include all tests, scans, drugs, four months of folic acid supplements which women trying to conceive are advised to take, counseling and stress relief programme.

Fertility Treatment May Produce Fewer Baby Boys

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The number of baby boys conceived by a fertility treatment known as ICSI may be lower than what is produced by Mother Nature, a new study suggests.

On average, there are 105 baby boys born for every 100 girls -- a natural advantage that helps balance out the higher number of deaths among male fetuses and infants. But in the new study, researchers found that this male-to-female birth ratio seems to be reversed when infants are conceived through intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI.

A NATIONAL network has been launched to help make sure women don't miss out on having babies because they are leaving it too late.

The UK Body Clock Network are offering all women over 30 a Body Clock Test at centres across Britain to check their future fertility. It is hoped the fertility "MOT" will help women realize the importance of age when it comes to conceiving a child.
