LONDON, UK - October 22, 2008 - There is new hope for couples struggling to have a baby says a study released this month in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine. As many as one in seven couples desiring a baby seek medical help in their struggle with infertility.
Researchers from the International Institute of Restorative Reproductive Medicine studied nearly 1100 couples who sought medical help to conceive using the new technique of NaProTechnology (NPT). Overall, 52.8% of patients completing treatment could expect to have a successful live birth, most often a single healthy baby. This rivals previously published results for in vitro fertilization (IVF), which may require patients to endure multiple invasive treatments to achieve a similar success rate. The NPT result is even more remarkable given that a third of these patients had already failed IVF, were older and had tried longer to have a baby. For patients who hadn't tried IVF the live birth rate rose to 61.5%.

Hormonal assessment was continued throughout the pregnancy and support provided if needed. The study also found minimal risk of multiple births, prematurity or low birth weights; all serious complications that are likely to occur if patients conceive using more invasive treatment, such as IVF. Consistent with previous research, this study found that younger women were more likely to have a successful pregnancy; however, NPT was still successful for older women, as long as they were not in established menopause.
The medical care in the study was provided by specially trained generalist (family) physicians, heralding a breakthrough in access to effective infertility treatment. Specialized NPT surgical care was not available at this location during the study period. Integrated NPT surgical care is part of ongoing studies and is likely to result in even further improvements in the live birth rates.

The first time Marie Pearson saw her seven-week-old baby's heart beat, rising and falling on the ultrasound monitor, she couldn't stop sobbing. Because of Cleveland's aging housing stock and history of industry, researchers at MetroHealth Medical Center decided to focus on the city's residents for an early-phase study to see whether prolonged lead exposure leads to premature menopause.
People are typically at risk of lead exposure when paint or other materials containing lead cracks and chips over time or during home renovations, getting into the air or dirt. But lead also can get into a person's bloodstream through some imported foods and constant exposure to other products containing lead.
For children who are especially at risk from living in older homes with lead paint, research already has shown a strong correlation between elevated levels of lead in the bloodstream and IQ loss, learning disabilities and neurobehavioral impairments.
Menopause at an earlier age can increase a woman's risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and certain cancers. Additionally, lead that is accumulated in bone is released into the blood when a woman experiences increased bone loss - usually occurring during menopause.

No, at least not if you take it alone, without other interventions, according to a new study by Scottish researchers in the British Medical Journal.
Neither Clomid (clomiphene citrate) - which is an ovulation stimulator - nor artificially inseminating women with sperm injected directly in the uterus, resulted in more live births than simply continuing to try to have babies the old-fashioned way, concluded the study. It was led by Siladitya Bhattacharya, a professor of reproductive medicine at the University of Aberdeen.
The study involved nearly 600 women who were unable to conceive for more than two years. These women had normal ovulatory cycles, open and healthy fallopian tubes and their partners had normally functioning sperm.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 13 (UPI) --U.S. scientists say advances in the analysis of proteins are providing researchers with an expanding understanding of male infertility.
The San Francisco State University researchers say proteins found in sperm are central to understanding male infertility and could be used to determine new diagnostic methods and fertility treatments.
The research by Assistant Professor Diana Chu and post-doctoral fellow Tammy Wu focused on how proteomics -- a relatively new field involving the function of proteins within cells -- can be successfully applied to infertility, helping identify which proteins in sperm cells are dysfunctional.
"Up to 50 percent of male-factor infertility cases in the clinic have no known cause, and therefore no direct treatment," said the scientists. "The ultimate goal is that a doctor could be able to say to a patient, 'this is the protein that is mis-regulated in your sperm and this is the drug that corrects it or decreases the level of that protein.' "

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 13 (UPI) --U.S. scientists say advances in the analysis of proteins are providing researchers with an expanding understanding of male infertility. The San Francisco State University researchers say proteins found in sperm are central to understanding male infertility and could be used to determine new diagnostic methods and fertility treatments.
The research by Assistant Professor Diana Chu and post-doctoral fellow Tammy Wu focused on how proteomics -- a relatively new field involving the function of proteins within cells -- can be successfully applied to infertility, helping identify which proteins in sperm cells are dysfunctional.
"Up to 50 percent of male-factor infertility cases in the clinic have no known cause, and therefore no direct treatment," said the scientists. "The ultimate goal is that a doctor could be able to say to a patient, 'this is the protein that is mis-regulated in your sperm and this is the drug that corrects it or decreases the level of that protein.' "

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Older single mothers who became pregnant with both a donated egg and donated sperm say they will likely tell their child about the sperm donation some day, but aren't sure whether they will reveal the egg donation as well, new research from Israel shows.
In Israel, the identity of sperm and egg donors is kept confidential by law. Fertility treatment is available to all women, no matter their age or marital status. To date, Dr. Ruth Landau of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and her team say, researchers have not looked at single women in their 40s who conceive via in vitro fertilization (IVF) with both egg and sperm donation.
