First Indian frozen egg cell baby born in Chennai

Chennai: It is yet another step forward in artificial reproductive methods. India's first baby from a frozen egg cell was born in Chennai on Wednesday.

The baby is healthy and weighs 2.5 kilos.

Frozen egg cell procedure is an artificial reproduction method where the egg cells from a woman are frozen and later fertilized to yield a foetus.

Analyzing the influence of age and basal levels of follicle stimulating hormone on the risk for aneuploidy in women undergoing IVF.

The risk of embryonic aneuploidy in women undergoing IVF is significantly influenced by age but not by follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, say scientists.

Researchers from the Lister Fertility Clinic in London, UK, note the decline in fecundity seen in women of advanced maternal age “is attributed to reduction of ovarian reserve and deterioration of oocyte quality.

Clomid, IUI no help for some types of infertility

A new study suggests that using the medication Clomid and undergoing intrauterine insemination (IUI) offer no benefit to women who suffer from unexplained infertility.

Researchers point out that many doctors use both of these methods on women who show no obvious reason for their infertility because "doing nothing" is not popular.

But in a study of 580 women, those who used Clomid or underwent IUI were no more likely to get pregnant than if they had done nothing. Experts point out that both Clomid and IUI are highly useful, but only if women have trouble ovulating or if there is a sperm motility issue.

Reproductive Associates of Delaware (RAD) Team Uses Frozen Donated Eggs, Opening Doors for New Fertility Treatments

Newark, DE (PRWEB) August 10, 2008 -- A patient of Reproductive Associates of Delaware (RAD) is in the second trimester of a healthy pregnancy, following the region's first successful use of thawed, frozen donated eggs.

In May, frozen donor eggs were shipped to the Delaware-based infertility clinic. Soon after, the eggs were successfully thawed and fertilized. An ongoing pregnancy occurred following the first attempt at transferring the embryos to the patient's uterus.

Dr. Ronald F. Feinberg, IVF Medical Director at RAD, notes that the availability of frozen eggs has opened a new era in fertility care, with new options for women. "Frozen sperm banks have been available for over thirty years. Egg freezing and thawing has been much more technically challenging. Nevertheless, research has progressed and various options for egg freezing and banking have now arrived."

"Frozen eggs offer women options in deciding when they wish to conceive, whether with their own eggs or with donor eggs," notes Dr. Barbara A. McGuirk, Medical Director for Reproductive Surgery at RAD. "Some women have diseases such as cancer earlier in life, and must delay childbearing. In addition, cancer treatments can destroy eggs. Around the world, many women have chosen to bank their eggs and/or ovarian tissue for future use. Others have opted to use donor eggs."

Women's aging has particularly negative effects on their eggs. RAD clinicians care for hundreds of women each year who have this problem. "Many of our patients who use donor eggs are only in their thirties," notes Dr. Feinberg. "They are often upset because no one informed them previously that ovarian aging is a serious and common problem."

Dr. McGuirk explained, "Freezing eggs give women and couples the time and convenience of using their eggs when they are ready to get pregnant, liberated from the financial, personal, and ethical dilemma presented with frozen embryos."

Dr. McGuirk added, "Egg donation is a highly successful treatment option for women who may not be able to get pregnant with their own eggs, but are still able to carry a pregnancy. However, the process of selecting the right women's eggs often presents challenges."

Achieving a pregnancy with frozen donor eggs may circumvent issues of time, money, and emotion. A representative of the supplier of the frozen eggs used in the Delaware pregnancy, Cryo Egg International, notes, "Patients frustrated by years of tests and failures greatly value the speed and convenience of frozen eggs and will seek the procedure in greater percentages."

Worldwide, it is estimated that over 1,000 healthy babies have been born following the use of frozen eggs. So far, it is believed that the incidence of birth defects and genetic abnormalities in those babies is no greater than that seen in babies born within the general population.

More women are turning to fertility clinics abroad

Hundreds of Irishwomen are travelling to clinics across the Continent to receive IVF treatment using eggs donated from young European women.

Childless couples are increasingly bypassing the small number of Irish clinics that offer donor eggs for up to ¤10,000. Instead, they are taking advantage of cheaper treatment, shorter waiting lists and a more plentiful supply of donors at clinics in Spain, the Czech Republic and Crete, often combining treatment with a holiday in those destinations.

Vitamin B12 deficiency, infertility & recurrent fetal loss

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship of infertility to recurrent fetal loss in patients who were vitamin B12 deficient.

STUDY DESIGN: The obstetric histories of 14 patients presenting with 15 episodes of vitamin B12 deficiency were analyzed. Infertility (two to eight years) had been present in four episodes, and recurrent fetal loss was a feature in 11.

RESULTS: In six episodes, periods of recurrent fetal loss were followed by periods of infertility greater than one year.

CONCLUSION: Hypercoagulability due to raised homocysteine levels may lead to fetal loss when vitamin B12 deficiency first develops. A more prolonged deficiency results in infertility by causing changes in ovulation or development of the ovum or changes leading to defective implantation.

Scientists have identified a possible cause of the painful womb condition endometriosis.

The team at the University of Liverpool believe over-production of an enzyme, telomerase, which plays a role in cell division may be responsible.

Endometriosis results in patches of the womb's inner lining growing in other parts of the body.

It is hoped the Human Reproduction study may lead to new ways to diagnose and treat the condition.

LIBBIE Wilson's overjoyed parents call her their miracle baby. Her arrival on June 29 brought an end to a five-year rollercoaster ride for Gail and Brian Wilson, during which time they faced cancer, grief and a diagnosis of infertility.

Pregnancy Beyond Menopause
With the advent of oocyte donation, women beyond the age of natural menopause may conceive and deliver with success rates similar to those of younger women. Despite reassuring perinatal outcomes, concerns remain regarding the ability of older parents to meet the emotional and physical demands of parenting. We sought to explore these issues...

To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate parenting in women who conceive after age fifty. Our data do not support the hypothesis that mothers of advanced maternal age have reduced parenting capacity secondary to physical or mental ability or parenting stress.

Nonprofit aims to educate consumers about the meaning of various medical screenings

Many of us are sent to the lab to have tests, but often the results that come back from these tests are poorly explained and mysterious. That's why the American Association for Clinical Chemistry has started a Web site called Lab Tests Online.

On the site, people can find information on about 250 of the most common lab tests, scroll through easy-to-understand explanations of conditions and diseases, and review outlines for general screening protocols and recommendations according to their age.

Dufour noted that although the site is written for the lay public in mind, they've found that one-quarter to one-third of users are, in fact, health-care professionals.

"And we actually have a lot of doctors who are referring patients to the site," noted Linzer. "And as a consequence, we've gotten comments back from patients that now that they have this information, they are able to go and talk more intelligently to their doctors. So, we think, in the end, that this is a site that both patients and doctors have come to appreciate."
