"This is a compilation of high FSH success stories put together by someone on a high FSH support board. This is highly unscientific, but it seems like even accounting for error and lack of randomization, the typical RE speech that says you have less than 5% chance of becoming pregnant with high FSH seems incorrect. It seems more like you have nearer to a 30% chance.

I thought this might be interesting to some of you ladies:

Infertile men can have a fair chance to be fertile by simply going through a painless invasive treatment that can significantly improve a couple's chance for pregnancy.

For this treatment, instead of going through an open surgery, which was the only known method yet, the patient will go through a retrograde venous embolization - a simple treatment that uses a catheter through the groin.

The treatment can help to improve sperm function in infertile men. The researchers also found that success of the treatment can also be predicted by the level of sperm motility.

Soy products contain chemicals mimicking female hormonesA regular diet of even modest amounts of food containing soy may halve sperm concentrations, suggest scientists.

The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, found 41 million fewer sperm per millilitre of semen after just one portion every two days.

The authors said plant oestrogens in foods such as tofu, soy mince or milk may interfere with hormonal signals.

Q. How did you become interested in fertility issues? What percent of your practice deals with fertility issues?

A. I became interested in fertility issues after finding that (infertility) was increasing in the population at an alarming rate -- and it was a common complaint with my patients since I specialized in women's health disorders.

Since Western-medical fertility treatments are usually not covered by health insurance, and in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles can cost from $10,000 to $15,000, I thought it was reasonable to offer Chinese medicine to those who couldn't afford IVF cycles and to offer it to those undergoing IVF to help increase their success rates.

Montreal, July 17, 2008 – A group of Canadian and European researchers have unlocked the mystery of a gene with the potential to both regulate and block ovulation. The new study – a collaboration between the Universitรฉ de Montrรฉal in Canada and the Institut de gรฉnetique et biologie molรฉculaire et cellulaire of the Universitรฉ de Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France – is published in the latest issue of the journal Genes & Development.

"Our findings demonstrate that the Lrh1 gene is essential in regulating ovulation," said Bruce D. Murphy, director the Animal Research Centre at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and an adjunct professor of and obstetrics and gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universitรฉ de Montrรฉal. "Until this point, the role of Lrh1 in female fertility was unclear, but we have found the gene regulates multiple mechanisms of ovulation and may affect fertilization."

To reach their conclusions, the research team developed a new type of genetically modified mouse whose Lrh1 gene was selectively blocked in the ovary. They found that deletion of the Lrh1 gene effectively stopped ovulation. "This discovery means we can envision new contraceptives that selectively stop ovulation," said Dr. Murphy. "If created, these new contraceptives would be more effective and produce less side-effects than current steroid-based forms of birth control."

What's more, the findings could lead to the development of pharmaceuticals that activate the Lrh1 gene, which may prove critical in giving infertile couples hope in producing children. "This is an important development, since 15 percent of couples are infertile," said Dr. Murphy. "The widespread role of this gene in the ovary indicates that it may be targeted to stimulate ovulation and, eventually, conception."

19 July, 2008 - This month Danish scientists reported results from a 10-year study that showed children born from previously frozen embryos that had been replaced in the womb had higher birth weight than those born when fresh embryos were used.

The mothers had longer pregnancies, and the children did not show increased risk for birth defects, according to Dr. Anja Pinborg of the Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet who presented the results at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology annual conference in Barcelona July 8.

Patricia Rashbrook became Britains oldest mother after giving birth at 63Women who are over 50 should have the right to fertility treatment, a top British scientist said today.

Professor Ian Craft said those opposed to older women becoming mothers are guilty of a 'police state mentality'.

The controversial doctor from the London Fertility Centre told a meeting of fertility experts that women have given birth after the menopause, which justifies giving those in their fifties IVF treatment.

Professor Craft, whose clinic helped a 56-year-old woman get pregnant, said: 'Knowing that natural conceptions do occur, why should infertile women be denied treatment that occurs naturally, whether they still menstruate or not?

assessing ovarian reserveThe methods for assessing ovarian reserve are classified into two groups: passive testing and dynamic testing. The goal of both approaches is to provide information regarding oocyte (egg) quality and quantity. We'll begin this section by examining passive testing methods.

As clinicians gained experience with IVF in the 1980's, it became apparent that early follicular-phase FSH levels played an important role in pregnancy outcomes. We soon discovered that day 3 FSH (measured by a blood test) could be very useful in predicting response to ovulation induction and IVF.

As a woman ages, FSH becomes elevated in an attempt to force the aging ovary to respond. However, the exact mechanism responsible for this adaptive response remains unknown. A rise in early follicular-phase FSH is also accompanied by a decline in oocyte quality, and some investigators have linked such FSH elevations to fetal abnormalities. In fact, it has been theorized that subtle but measurable increases in FSH precede menopause by approximately five years in some women

Babies From Frozen Embryo Just As Healthy: Study

Published on July 9, 2008

Using frozen embryos in place of fresh ones during
IVF procedures produces healthier babies with higher birth weight and lesser abnormalities, a new Danish study reports.

The findings of the study presented at a meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology on Tuesday provided strong evidence stating that
babies born from frozen embryos were just as healthy as those conceived naturally.

The team of Danish researchers monitored medical records of nearly over 1,200 children born in Denmark between 1995 and 2006 using frozen embryos technique. Also monitored were nearly 18,000 children born from fresh embryos during the same period.

Upon comparison of medical records between the two groups of
infants born using different techniques, the babies in the frozen embryo group weighed about 200 grams more at time of birth and also had a lesser percentage of pre-term births as compared to the other group, the Danish researchers found.

Also, frozen embryo technique did not increase the risk of congenital birth defects among infants. The congenital birth defects rate in the frozen embryo group was 7.1 per cent compared to 8.8 per cent where fresh embryos had been used. Moreover, fewer newborns required immediate medical support or admission to neonatal intensive care units, researchers found.

"According to this study, which is currently the largest on frozen embryo replacement offspring, these children perform as ... offspring after fresh embryo transplant or even better," the researchers remarked.

‘The strongest embryos survived the freezing process’ researchers of the study said while explaining why frozen embryos produced better results than the ‘fresh’ ones.

Freezing embryos, a well-established form of assisted conception treatment saves eggs for future use. Embryos are stored in liquid
nitrogen at a temperature of minus 196ยบ C for up to five years. Stored at such low temperature they are in a state of suspended animation where all metabolic activity is halted.

Pregnancy is predictable: a large-scale prospective external validation of the prediction of spontaneous pregnancy in subfertile couples.

BACKGROUND: Prediction models for spontaneous pregnancy may be useful tools to select subfertile couples that have good fertility prospects and should therefore be counselled for expectant management. We assessed the accuracy of a recently published prediction model for spontaneous pregnancy in a large prospective validation study.

METHODS: In 38 centres, we studied a consecutive cohort of subfertile couples, referred for an infertility work-up. Patients had a regular menstrual cycle, patent tubes and a total motile sperm count (TMC) less than 3 x 10(6). After the infertility work-up had been completed, we used a prediction model to calculate the chance of a spontaneous ongoing pregnancy ( www.freya.nl/probability.php ).

The primary end-point was time until the occurrence of a spontaneous ongoing pregnancy within 1 year. The performance of the pregnancy prediction model was assessed with calibration, which is the comparison of predicted and observed ongoing pregnancy rates for groups of patients and discrimination.

CONCLUSIONS: As the chance of a spontaneous ongoing pregnancy among subfertile couples can be accurately calculated, this prediction model can be used as an essential tool for clinical decision-making and in counselling patients. The use of the prediction model may help to prevent unnecessary treatment.

A look of mild embarrassment comes over all but the thickest skinned of them, and they drop their voices down to a tactful mumble. "Well, you know… being an older dad."
