National Infertility Awareness Week Oct. 19-25

ATLANTA, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- National Infertility Awareness Week, Oct. 19-25, is a movement to raise awareness about the condition which affects 7.3 million Americans. Metro Atlantans grappling with infertility can consider options available to them that others here have had success.

Infertility, which touches both men and women, is defined as the inability
to conceive after one year of trying with unprotected intercourse for couples
in which the female is younger than age 35 and six months of trying for
couples in which the female is older than 35.

"The good news is that nearly 90 percent of infertility cases are overcome
through today's advanced techniques,"
said Michael Tucker, scientific director at Georgia Reproductive Specialists (GRS), Atlanta. Recognized as one of the world's top 10 scientists in early human reproduction, Tucker is responsible for pioneering the world's first birth from frozen donor eggs. This
breakthrough freezing is offered at GRS.

There are many faces of infertility. Take for example, Shane McCord, a
recent patient of GRS. At age 3, he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a
disease frequently leaving the patient infertile. After tests revealed McCord
lacked a vas deferens, he and his wife were able to conceive using in vitro
fertilization (IVF).

Another patient, Susan Stegall, and her partner wanted to raise a family.
Stegall received through IVF her partner's egg, which had been inseminated by a sperm donor. Together, they had a son. Five years later, the same process involved Stegall's egg and the same sperm donor and resulted in a baby girl.

Aware that age is a factor in influencing fertility, patient Kurena Hill
came to GRS after she and her husband were unable to conceive. After several unsuccessful attempts at intrauterine insemination, also called artificial insemination, and a miscarriage, the doctor of then 35-year-old Hill extracted nearly a dozen eggs from her, froze them and then transferred thawed, fertilized eggs to Hill. As a result, at age 36, she gave birth to a daughter.

While IVF is far from the only solution to infertility, a recent survey by
GRS of couples facing infertility issues indicates it was the most widely
known treatment among respondents. Virtually all -- 97 percent -- of the women and men surveyed said that prior to receiving infertility counseling they were familiar with IVF. Conversely, only 37 percent were aware of intracytoplasmic sperm injection, which involves the direct injection of sperm into eggs obtained through IVF. Some 57 percent were aware of the process of freezing eggs for later use.

Age is a factor with infertility for both women and men. Almost half -- 45
percent -- of the survey respondents were 35, the age at which fertility
starts declining significantly, or older. These respondents reported they had
been trying to conceive an average of 23 months.

"Our message to couples facing infertility is that most infertility issues
can be overcome with the proper diagnosis and treatment,"
said Dr. Mark
Perloe, GRS medical director. "A structure as we have provides the patient
with the utmost in testing, counseling and treatment options. Our renowned physicians are here to help fulfill our patients desire to start or expand a family."

new research claims antidepressants could damage sperm and risk infertilityA SHEFFIELD fertility expert says new research which claims millions of men who take antidepressants could damage their sperm and risk infertility is 'of concern.'

The findings suggest that commonly described drugs for depression can break up DNA in sperm.

Outwardly the sperm may appear normal in numbers, shape and swimming ability. But similar levels of DNA fragmentation in sperm are said to have led to fertility and pregnancy problems.

For couples undergoing In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment, fewer embryos form when the man's sperm has damaged DNA, says the Cornell Medical Center in New York City.

Dr Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield, said: "The apparent increase in sperm DNA damage is alarming, although the level at which we think the damage becomes clinically significant is controversial to many scientists.

"It is a shame that the authors appear not to have conducted a randomised controlled trial which would be the most scientific way to investigate the drugs effects, but the results are of concern and need to be investigated."

Low Sperm Count May Be Associated with Prenatal Testosterone ExcessChevy Chase, MD — Exposure to an excess of sexual steroids, like testosterone, during fetal development may be a potential risk factor for low sperm count and motility, according to a new study accepted for publication in Endocrinology, a journal of The Endocrine Society.

"The majority of disorders affecting sperm count in humans are originated during fetal life" said Professor Sergio Recabarren of the University of Concepcion in Chillan, Chile and lead author of the study. "A developing fetus is very vulnerable to its environment, and when that environment is exposed to excess sexual steroids, it may have a significant deleterious effect on a male offspring’s fertility"

Prenatal exposure to excess sexual steroids can occur in two ways, said Dr. Recabarren. First, the exposure may be a product of increased sexual steroids in the maternal environment due to a hormonal condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome. Second, humans are exposed to several industrial pollutants which can act as steroid mimics, causing the body to inhibit or accelerate native steroid production.

In this study, researchers treated pregnant sheep with 30 mg testosterone propionate twice weekly from days 30 to 90 of pregnancy and with 40 mg testosterone propionate from days 90 to 120 of pregnancy. They found a significant reduction in body weight, scrotal circumference, and sperm count in male sheep born to these mothers compared with control sheep.

"While this research involved sheep, it can certainly be argued that in humans, exposure to an excess of sexual steroids during fetal development could constitute a potential risk factor that may conduct to a low sperm count" said Dr. Recabarren.

Low sperm counts are also associated with testicular cancer, with an incidence rate 20 fold higher than men with normal sperm analysis, said Dr. Recabarren. The findings from this study highlight growing concerns of the detrimental effects of prenatal steroid excess on reduced sperm counts.

A rapid release version of this article, "Prenatal Testosterone Excess Reduces Sperm Count and Motility" has been published on-line and will appear in the December issue of Endocrinology.

Mobile phones kill spermSPERM HAS YET another enemy – this time it’s none other than your trusty device, the mobile phone.

That’s right, the Cleveland Clinic is now saying that keeping your mobile phone in talk-mode and in your pocket can decrease sperm quality – if you’re a man of course.

Ashok Agarwal, the Director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine says that, “We believe that these devices are used because we consider them very safe, but it could cause harmful effects due to the proximity of the phones and the exposure that they are causing to the gonads."

Heated car seats reduce fertilityHamburg, Germany - Heated car seats reduce fertility in men, according to German researchers.

The researchers at the University of Giessen have discovered that just one hour of sitting in a heated car seat can cause a testicular temperature spike of up to 39.7 Celsius (or 103 Fahrenheit).

That is four or five degrees Celsius higher than the optimum temperature for healthy sperm production, which is around two degrees below the body's core temperature of 37 C (99 F), according to the findings reported in New Scientist magazine.

The German researchers attached heat sensors to the testicles of 30 healthy volunteers, who then sat on heated car seats for a total of 90 minutes.

After one hour, the test revealed the average testicular temperature to be 37.3 C (99.5 F), which is around two degrees above optimum for sperm production, while one test subject experienced a 60 minute flush of 39.7 C (103 F).

In terms of the rate of testicle warmth attributed to men who do not use heated car seat technology, the study revealed average scrotal temperature to be 36.7 C (98 F).

According to study leader, Andreas Jung and his university team, only a slight increase in testicle temperature - as shown by the research figures - is enough to have a potentially detrimental effect on healthy sperm production.

A new test that can detect if the eggs produced by a woman are defective may prove to be a boon for wannabe mothers who opt for in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Till now, women would routinely subject themselves to a series of failed IVF attempts without realising they carried defective eggs, which would produce abnormal children.

Medical experts at Delhi’s Phoenix Hospital explain the procedure as follows: “A healthy egg contains a spindle, which holds the complete genetic package. Some eggs don’t contain it. A special imaging system called the spindle view, in use abroad since 2003 and now available in India, makes it easy to check that.”

Egg freezing free for womenWorking women who want to postpone motherhood can have their eggs frozen for free - if they agree to give half to infertile couples.

Egg freezing, which is generally restricted by doctors to cancer patients made infertile by chemotherapy, is increasingly being made available for non-medical reasons.

Yet its £5,000 price tag is prohibitive for many would-be mothers.

The Bridge Centre clinic in London, however, is offering free egg freezing if women agree to give half the eggs to infertile couples.

Dr. Antonin Bukovsky MD, PhD., reviews microscope images projected onto a computer screenIn the May 5, 2005, issue of Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology, the discovery that new human eggs can be developed in vitro from cells scraped from the surface of adult human ovaries was made in the laboratory of Dr. Antonin Bukovsky, MD, PhD.

These results suggest that cells scraped from the ovary could be a potential source of new eggs for women who have trouble conceiving — either due to age or other complications such as a lack of ovarian follicles, the structures composed of an egg surrounded by granulosa cells.

For women who want to delay having babies, these results suggest the possibility of having ovarian surface epithelium (OSE) cells frozen in order to produce new eggs at a later date.

NEW Location in Wellington, IVF Florida Reproductive AssociatesThe cost of medical treatment is just part of the expense of in vitro fertilization (IVF) with donor eggs. Typically, almost half of the total expense is due to out-of-pocket expenditures for identifying and screening the egg donor. The new enhanced package from IntegraMed covers a comprehensive list of services in addition to the costs of the standard medical procedures included in the Shared Risk Refund Program. Patients now have the option of including the costs for donor screening, donor compensation, case management and advanced embryology services such as blastocyst culture, assisted hatching, cryopreservation of embryos and embryo storage for the first 6 months.

Patients may elect to enroll in the standard donor egg recipient program, which covers medical treatment for the egg donor and recipient only, or the new enhanced program, and pay a flat rate up front. In both the new program and the standard program, donor egg recipients are eligible for up to three IVF cycles and unlimited frozen embryo transfers (using eggs retrieved during the stimulated cycles performed during program participation) at no additional cost.

As with other Shared Risk Refund Program offerings, if IVF treatment using donor eggs should fail, up to 100% of the fees paid to IntegraMed will be refunded. IntegraMed's refund guarantee makes this new option the most prudent way for patients to spend their money on IVF treatment. They will either take a baby home or get their money back.

"We're offering this new program in response to the needs of our patients who are donor egg recipients," said IVF Florida reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Debbra A. Keegan. "While success rates of treatment with donor eggs are very high, nearly half of all patients will need more than one cycle to be successful. The enhanced Shared Risk Refund Program helps them manage the majority of the costs involved with donor eggs, so they can stay in treatment and get what they want, a baby."

Planning for more than one IVF cycle can help reduce the stress and anxiety of treatment, and increase the opportunity to have a child. The IntegraMed Shared Risk Refund Program now offers an array of options to make IVF treatment manageable, from the basic option for IVF patients to the new enhanced refund program for donor egg recipients.

For more information or to find out if they qualify, patients planning to use donor eggs should call 1-866-YOUR-IVF or 502-271-5999. For additional information, visit http://www.ivfflorida.com .

IVF success rates - sperm competition may be keyThere have been numerous studies on both human and animal sexual behavior to help understand the fertilization process, and how to stimulate the production of large amounts of healthier sperm. One of the most common areas of study is sperm competition.

According to author G.A. Parker, if more than one male's sperm occupies the same female, sperm competition will occur. Based on certain circumstances and situations, males in various species have been known to tailor their ejaculations so that they can compete with other males.

Think of it as a lottery. The more tickets you buy, the greater your chance of winning.

First off, take into consideration the meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus), which is a small rodent that can be found in North America. According to Drs. Janier delBarco, and Trillo & Michael H. Ferkinthis, the meadow vole or field mouse is significant because if it detects other males in the area where it is having intercourse, it will produce much more sperm than if other males were not present.

A Dublin-based study carried out by Utah University in America has questioned the effectiveness of in-vitro fertilisationA Dublin-based study carried out by Utah University in America has questioned the effectiveness of in-vitro fertilisation.

Natural fertility treatment is more effective than in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), according to new research by the University of Utah in America.

It found that one in four of the 1,100 couples treated with natural methods in a clinic in Galway had successful pregnancies using natural procreative technology treatment (NPT). This compares with the most recent European success rates of 18.4% for IVF.

Eat Every 13 Minutes DietIf you love snacking, then this is the diet for you because you have to eat every 13 minutes. By speeding up your metabolism you can lose 7lbs in two weeks, and may even boost your fertility.

What is it?
The 13-minute diet was created by Norah Lane, founder of Vitaline Slimming Clubs, and is designed to speed up your metabolism. It's a 14-day plan that will suit snackaholics down to the ground as you literally get to eat every 13 minutes!

According to Norah Lane, it might even boost your fertility if you suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). On average, you'll lose around 7lbs in two weeks.

How does it work?
Norah believes some overweight people don't eat enough food to keep their metabolic rate working. She reckons snacking every 13 minutes will keep your metabolism working at a steady pace.

By eating low-calorie tiny snacks very regularly, you curb hunger. Eating raw vegetables bombards your body with essential vitamins while eating regular protein will help you feel full as protein is the most filling nutrient.

According to Norah, women who suffer from PCOS have slow metabolisms. So by snacking so regularly, and speeding up your metabolism, you might even increase your chances of conceiving!

Still waiting - Imogen Edwards-JonesDuring her teens, Imogen Edwards-Jones was terrified of falling pregnant – now 36, she fears she will never have a child
When I was a teenager, I thought you could get pregnant from sitting in a Jacuzzi. Not that I'm sure I even knew what a Jacuzzi was, but I knew they were racy places where racy things happened. Men, as far as I remember, didn't even have to be there. So long as they'd been in the water in some sort of excitable state, pregnancy was inevitable — even if you kept your pants on. You see, pregnancy was that easy, that dangerous, and it could ruin your life.

Almost 20 years later and pregnancy could still ruin my life. TODAY'S BOOK SUGGESTION:
Image: What I Thought I Knew: A Memoir, by Alice Eve Cohen. Publisher: Viking Adult (July 9, 2009)What I Thought I Knew: A Memoir
by Alice Eve Cohen
--A personal and medical odyssey beyond anything most women would believe possible

At age forty-four, Alice Eve Cohen was happy for the first time in years.

After a difficult divorce, she was engaged to an inspiring man, joyfully raising her adopted daughter, and her career was blossoming. Alice tells her fiancé that she's never been happier. And then the stomach pains begin.

In her unflinchingly honest and ruefully witty voice, Alice nimbly carries us through her metamorphosis from a woman who has come to terms with infertility to one who struggles to love a heartbeat found in her womb - six months into a high-risk pregnancy.

What I Thought I Knew is a page-turner filled with vivid characters, humor, and many surprises and twists of fate.

With the suspense of a thriller and the intimacy of a diary, Cohen describes her unexpected journey through doubt, a broken medical system, and the hotly contested terrain of motherhood and family in today's society.

Timely and compelling, What I Thought I Knew will capture readers of memoirs such as Eat, Pray, Love; The Glass Castle; and A Three Dog Life.

"Whatever else is happening with diabetes and heart disease ... gross sexual dysfunction and infertility could be part of the story," Dandona told Reuters Health.
