Group urges young women not to freeze eggs

LONDON, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- The American Society for Reproductive Medicine has urged young women not to freeze their eggs as part of an effort to postpone motherhood.
While three clinics in Britain currently offer egg-freezing services to women looking to delay motherhood for various reasons, the international group argued the procedure is still experimental and therefore unethical, The Times of London said Wednesday.
"We acknowledge that many women, very understandably, have an interest in this emerging technology, which might help them to achieve their reproductive goals," ASRM official Marc Fritz said. "But it is not an established medical practice."
Fritz, who headed up the society's practice committee on the matter, urged young women to consider all aspects of the medical procedure before moving forward with any reproduction plans.
"It is essential that they receive thorough counseling about the procedures, costs and risks that are involved," he told the British newspaper, "including that it is statistically unlikely that the majority will ever need or use their cryo-preserved oocytes."

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
